Start Christmas With The Blackbeard’s Tea Party at The Atkinson

They were voted best band at last year’s Cropredy Convention, and named THE band to see at Glastonbury by the Huffington Post. 2014 also saw Blackbeard’s Tea Party make a huge impact at festivals as diverse as Shrewsbury Folk Festival, Costa Del Folk in Spain, and the Rainforest World Music Festival in Borneo.

With this growing reputation, it’s hardly a surprise that they are one of the most in-demand bands on the folk circuit and The Atkinson is delighted to be welcoming them to perform for the first time on Friday 4 December.

Playing together since summer 2009, Blackbeard’s Tea Party began as a busking, function and ceilidh band, but quickly grew a reputation as a formidable live act. They soon found themselves selling out venues in their home town of York.

Word quickly spread, and the band began to play gigs further afield, including a number of noteworthy festival concerts and ceilidh bookings through 2010 and 2011. These included Sidmouth, Shrewsbury and a headline slot at Galtres, amongst others.

Traditional songs and folk tunes are given a heavy rock edge with playful arrangements and driving dance rhythms. This is all mixed up in an engaging, high-octane stage show that frequently leaves audiences cheering for more.

Their new album titled Reprobates, highlights the record’s theme and gives a nod to the boisterous band’s reputation for musical mischief, frequently breaking folk rock’s conventions with insertions of funk, dance and classic rock.

Blackbeard’s Tea Party combine fiddle, melodeon and voice with the interlocking grooves of two hand percussionists, a distorted electric guitar and funk-inflected bass patterns, and although the six-piece often take traditional tunes and songs as a starting point, the gutsy, playful, anarchic results are not for folk purists.

Blackbeard’s Tea Party perform at The Atkinson on Friday 4 December at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £14 (£12 concessions) and are available online at theatkinson.co.uk or by calling the Box Office on 01704 533333. They are also available over the counter during The Atkinson opening hours.
