Southport Jazz Club Launches Jazz Café at The Atkinson

The Bakery in The Atkinson is to become the new venue for a monthly Jazz night run in partnership with the venue and the new Southport Jazz Club.

Local musicians Mike Smith, Tom Sykes and Miranda Rimmer formed Southport Jazz Club to showcase some of the best upcoming jazz artists, culminating in an open mic jazz jam with the guest band. This monthly event is open to all ages and abilities.

Mike Smith, a founder member of Southport Jazz Club said:
“We want to build jazz audiences for the town, both for musicians and audiences. The Bakery is a great venue for a regular Jazz night, it’s relaxed, is within an arts venue and offers great food and drinks as part of the experience.

It’s our aim to work with The Atkinson to really build a popular and high quality night that will become part of Southport’s social calendar. It is really for all music fans as jazz underpins so many genres. We just ask that people come along and give it a go!”

The new programme of Jazz Café nights start on Thursday 27 October at 7.30pm   with Southport’s very own Ginger Tunes Quartet.

Mike Smith’s Ginger Tunes Quartet is a contemporary soul/jazz group from the North West, comprising of Mike Smith (sax/keys), JJ Rio (bass), Tom Stichbury (guitar) and Jonathan Irving (drums). They will be playing tunes from their latest album ‘Mersey, Mersey, Mersey’, an album that celebrates the city that has given them and so many others a life in music, and captures the defiant humour and artistic mischief distinctive of Merseyside.

The series continues on Thursday 24 November with Sonorous Quartet and ends its first season with its Christmas Special with Naomi Webber on Thursday 15 December.

Tickets are £5 and can be booked online at theatkinson.co.uk or call our Box Office team on 01704 533333.
