In Pursuit of the Past, Victorian Women and Ancient Egypt: Travellers, Collectors and Scholars
Share:

Talk by Dr Joanne Backhouse, University of Liverpool

Restricted by the moral straight jacket of Victorian society, the study of Ancient Egypt provided a means of escape for middle class women. It gave them the opportunity to travel, study and become collectors of antiquities. This talk will examine the achievements and adventures of Florence Nightingale, Amelia Edwards and Marianne Brocklehurst.
