Bolshoi Ballet – The Sleeping Beauty at The Atkinson

Tchaikovsky’s adaptation of Charles Perrault’s fairy-tale The Sleeping Beauty danced by the Bolshoi Ballet will be shown at The Atkinson on Sunday, January 29 at 3pm.

This ballet is part of a series presenting this season three masterpieces in production by Bolshoi’s historical ballet master Yuri Grigorovich, who turned 90 years old in January.

More than 1,600 cinemas in over 60 countries: over 35 countries will show the broadcast from Moscow.

A DREAM-LIKE CAST

For this one-time event, the young and rising star principal Olga Smirnova will be dancing the main part of Princess Aurora, who falls for Fairy Carabosse’s (danced by Alexei Loparevich) trick and falls into a slumber of 100 years. In the role of Prince Désiré, whose kiss will eventually bring her back to life; will be danced by talented principal Semyon Chudin.

GRIGOROVICH’S 90TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT

This cinema-exclusive release of The Sleeping Beauty is the second in a series of three ballets this season, after the Nutcracker last December and followed by Swan Lake (varying dates in February 2017). These three ballets have been restaged by Yuri Grigorovich, the Bolshoi’s legendary ballet master who turned 90 on January 2, 2017.

Since the 1960s, the Russian choreographer has staged a great number of ballets for the Bolshoi, repertoire classics along with modern creations, and has given the company some of its most celebrated productions to this day.
