The community spirit in Southport is strong, and in recent times, we’ve witnessed residents and businesses uniting to maintain our town’s welcoming, vibrant, and connected atmosphere. At The Atkinson, we continue to advocate for the enjoyment of arts, culture, and heritage; where you can be entertained, inspired, learn, and enhance your wellbeing.
This October, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of our Egyptology Museum. We are lucky to care for The Goodison Collection, which was brought together by wealthy Victorian lady Mrs Anne Goodison. Anne exhibited her stunning collection in a ‘Museum Room’ in her home in Waterloo, Liverpool. The Goodison name might be familiar to those acquainted with the civil engineer George Goodison, after whom Everton’s football ground is named. Anne’s collection of artefacts is both varied and well preserved, and it allows us to imagine life as an ancient Egyptian, rich and poor.
Black History Month happens every October and is an opportunity to share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture. We have worked with SACHA (Southport African Caribbean Heritage Association) to celebrate the contribution of the Windrush generation and their descendants to our community through a new exhibition of photography by Ean Flanders and video by Christopher Chadwick.
The Theatre and Studio are bustling with activity this season, and we have a packed programme of music, theatre, and comedy for all audiences. Comedian Shaparak Khorsandi (4 Oct) lets us into her chaotic and hilarious brain, ABC’s Martin Fry (30 Oct) presents an intimate evening of music and conversation, There Was an Old Lady that Swallowed a Fly (31 Oct) is a charming half term treat and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (5 Nov) offers a thrilling gothic adventure. Every seat in our auditorium has a great view of the stage and a range of accessible seating can be booked directly from the Box Office, just ask our helpful staff for guidance.
Attending a Christmas pantomime is a cherished tradition for many, often serving as a first introduction to live theatre. Here at The Atkinson, we pride ourselves on delivering a traditional family panto that captivates all ages. This year, Sleeping Beauty (6-31 Dec) stars Blue Peter presenter, magician and TikTok sensation, Joel M! Get ready to boo, hiss, and cheer as our talented cast takes you on a magical ride through the kingdom of ‘Southportopia’. We look forward to welcoming you!
