On the first Wednesday of every month, Grateful Fred bring world class Americana, Roots and Acoustic music to The Atkinson.

Last January we had one of the best Grateful Fred Nights when our headliners were the wonderful “Jaywalkers” and our support artist was our good friend “Gerry fFrench”. It was such a good evening we’ve asked them both to come back and do it all again!

The Club Night
7:30pm – Gerry fFrench
8:20pm – Petticoat & Vine
8:40pm – Interval
9:00pm – Jaywalkers

Jaywalkers

Jaywalkers have been delighting audiences for over 11 years; taking their exciting, inventive and virtuosic brand of Americana up, down and around the UK and Europe. These three outstanding musicians have developed a tight bond, demonstrated through their well-crafted, tasteful arrangements and ability to bounce ideas around the stage. The combination of powerhouse bass, flame-fingered mandolin, blistering fiddle and three-part harmony pack a punch as fiery as Jay ’s lead vocals and make a fuller sound than expected from an acoustic trio.

As those who have been fortunate enough to catch them in full flight will testify, a Jaywalkers show is an exhilarating experience. UK-based they may be but many from the other side of the Atlantic have complimented them on their particularly stylish delivery of this virtuosic brand of Americana. “An effortless blend British and American folk traditions to create something arguably greater than either of these genres.” Acoustic magazine

“ ***** Vibrant, tight and energetic.“ R2 Rock’n’Reel

“Jaywalkers are the real deal… three incredible musicians creating a bluegrass party on stage. There must have been some dark trades with the devil to give Mike Giverin such mastery of the mandolin and Jay Bradberry such skill with fiddle and voice.” FolkOnMonday

Support Act

Petticoat & Vine

Fifty years ago Grateful Fred was a member of the four-part harmony band, Petticoat & Vine. Along with Norman, Val and Joan they appeared on many national TV and radio shows, including “The Harry Secome Show”, The Benny Hill Show” and “The Jimmy Tarbuck Show” and many BBC radio shows.

They released three singles, and amongst many other things, wrote the music and performed in two successful musical plays written by playwright John McGrath at The Everyman Theatre, Liverpool and toured the UK with The Scaffold, appearing with them before the Queen at the opening of the second Mersey Tunnel.

Petticoat & Vine have reformed for the evening to perform their original singles and songs.

Support Act

Gerry fFrench

Winner of Folk Northwest Magazine’s talent showcase at Costa del Folk Portugal in October 2017, Gerry is one of the finest singer songwriters working in the Northwest today. Her Liverpool-Irish roots have helped nurture a wonderful performer, writer and recording artist of rich contemporary folk music.

With their strong local flavour, Gerry’s own songs make many references to Liverpool’s maritime history while their style is firmly rooted in traditional folk and shanty. Now she is embarked on a mission to record and celebrate a way of life which has all but disappeared from Liverpool and every other major seaport. The hard lives of the sailors’ wives have never been fully given a voice in the same way that the lives of their husbands and sons were; Gerry’s songs such as The Other Maggie May, When the Wind Blows Up From The Mersey and of course Cunard Yanks – do just that, telling the stories of the wives and the families left behind.

A regular performer in the Northwest, Gerry is a musician with a great voice who is in demand at festivals and live venues across Merseyside and the UK. Holland, Ireland and Costa del Folk – in both Ibiza and Portugal – have now been added to her list of Festival destinations. Her appeal is growing as her own songs and stories are played out in her very popular live performances.
