Reopening Times & Services

Following the government roadmap, The Atkinson is reopening in stages with reduced visiting times and limited services. We take the safety and wellbeing of our customers and staff seriously, and we are closely following advice from the Government and Sefton Council.


ICT Downtime: Thursday 24 – Saturday 26 June 2021

To ensure the electrical safety of our buildings, Sefton Council, like all local authorities, has a legal obligation to ensure the safety and integrity of our buildings and systems. From Thursday 24 – Saturday 26 June 2021 The Atkinson’s ICT system will be down and some of our services will be unavailable.

We apologise for the inconvenience cause.

Museum & Galleries  Open as usual.

Box Office – Closed. Tickets can be purchased online.

Shop – Cash sales only with hand written receipt.

Café – Open as usual.

Southport LibraryComputers are unavailable. Personal library account information is unavailable, customers will be unable to pay overdue charges, check renewal dates etc.

One Stop Shop – Manned for advice only. No access to online or telephony systems.

Customer WiFi – Unavailable.


Museum, Galleries, Box Office, Shop, Café & Library

Monday – Saturday. 11am – 4pm.
We are closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays

Museum & Galleries – There is a one-way system in place around the museum and galleries and family trails are available to download ahead of your visit. Free entry. Booking is not required. On our website you can browse our collection of Online Exhibitions, discover our Collections and learn something new in our Online Events programme.

Box Office – The Box Office team are available to help with booking enquiries, refunds and exchanges. Please use contactless payments were possible. Find out What’s On.

Shop – In the Shop, please refrain from handling items unnecessarily and be aware of social distancing in this small space.

Café A Great Little Place will be offering a takeaway service and limited indoor seating.

Library – The Library is open, however services are limited. Please check the Sefton Libraries page for up to date information: sefton.gov.uk/libraries. A One Stop Shop service is located in the Library, available by appointment only. To arrange an appointment call the Contact Centre on 0345 140 0845 or visit the Sefton Council website for more information.


Safety Measures


All visitors aged 16 and over are required to provide NHS Test & Trace details on arrival. If you have a smart phone, please download the NHS Test & Trace app and scan the QR codes located in the foyer when you arrive to help speed up entry. These details are kept securely for 21 days and held only for the purpose of contacting people who may have been exposed to a confirmed case of Covid-19 when they have been identified as visiting The Atkinson. As Sefton Council are the Public Health Authority, we will fully support the programme by allowing in only those willing to give their details.

It is mandatory to wear protective face coverings throughout The Atkinson, unless you are eating in the café. We will monitor visitor capacity to ensure that appropriate social-distancing is maintained at all times. Toilet facilities are available for visitors to The Atkinson. Please ask a member of staff if you need assistance.


Temporarily Closed


Theatre & Studio In line with the government’s roadmap out of lockdown, the Theatre & Studio will not reopen before Step 4.  Further information will be provided in due course. Our programme for 2021 is full of comedy, music, theatre and dance. Find out What’s On.

We have been granted the use of Society of London Theatre & UK Theatre’s See It Safely mark. The mark certifies that we are complying with the latest Government and industry COVID-19 guidelines, to ensure the safety of our staff and audiences.
