VICTORIAN CLASSIC CHARLEY’S AUNT COMES TO THE ATKINSON

Following on from their previous production The Rivals, Creative Cow, in association with Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford, are bringing Brandon Thomas’s extravagant Victorian farce, Charley’s Aunt,  to The Atkinson, Southport’s brand new cultural hub for a 4 day run.

A firm British classic which has found success on Broadway, Charley’s Aunt takes audiences back to 1892, where dashing Oxford undergraduates, Jack and Charley are preparing to propose to Amy and Kitty, two lovely young girls, but a chaperone is needed for the evening and as luck would have it, Charley’s Aunt is arriving from Brazil (where the nuts come from) and will happily serve the purpose.  However, when her trip is delayed they decide their friend Lord Fancourt Babberley, a dabbler in amateur dramatics, should assume her identity. When villainous Spettigue and Donna Lucia, Charley’s real aunt, enter the fray, this becomes a ridiculously tangled web of intrigue with highlights which includes a breathtaking chase, a musical interlude and an absurd number of marital engagements!

Creative Cow was conceived on a farm in Devon in 2007 by artistic director Amanda Knott and two professional actors Jonathan Parish and Katherine Senior. Creative Cow offers the very best in classic and contemporary playwriting, produced by a skilled, inventive and current theatre company. Creative Cow tours the UK to large & mid scale theatres alongside unconventional spaces with two productions a year and with their latest endeavour lauded as “Gloriously flamboyant” and “gentle uncomplicated and timeless fun” (The Stage) Victorian vim and verve will be alive at the Atkinson this Summer.
