March 21st, 1926 – a date when Southport’s sands made the headlines as Sir Henry Segrave smashed the land speed record for 1km, attaining the heady speed of 153mph.

His attempt to secure the fastest mile record faltered on the beach when his supercharged car was damaged.

However, Segrave and Southport’s place in motoring history was assured, although the record tumbled and changed hands over the coming years.

In 1929 Sir Henry Segrave set a new record of 231mph on the salt flats of America, which had become the place to go to break speed records.

The next year he died on Lake Windermere while breaking the world water speed record.

A remarkable man in a remarkable time.

The lecture takes place at The Atkinson on Lord Street at 6.30pm on Thursday, September 26th.
