Magic Lanterns Tell Tales of Old at The Atkinson

Magic Lanterns Tell Tales of Old at The Atkinson

This summer, as part of the Vintage Season – The Atkinson re-visits the past with a programme of events that tells stories of old using Magic Lanterns an early type of image projector developed in the 17th century.

Andrew Gill a magic lantern showman will transport you back to Victorian England with a presentation of his authentic Victorian magic lantern on Thursday 17 July at 7.30pm.

The original magic lantern and glass slides used are up to 170 years old and his performance includes a selection of photographic slides of Southport taken one hundred years ago. This Victorian Magic Lantern event is unique, funny, moving, informative and surprising. Tickets are £5.

On Friday 18 July poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan and documentary photographer Ian Beesley come together to tell the story of the First World War using a real magic lantern projector as part of The Atkinson’s World War One Commemorative Programme.

We often view war as a series of huge historical sweeps and this show reminds us that war is made by people who each have their own narrative of what happened

Using a real magic lantern projector the story of the First World War is told from the point of view of men who survived it and lived on to old age and a changing world. Here too are the tales of women who worked in the factories that oiled the wheels of war.

Ian and Ian also explore the culture of magic lantern shows – from the natural world to engineering and from small disasters to Empire.

‘world-class – one of today’s greatest poetry performers’ Carol Ann Duffy

Ian McMillan and Ian Beesley – Magic Lanterns takes place at The Atkinson on Friday 18 July at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 (£10 concessions).

Finally, The Atkinson’s new summer exhibition Unseen Southport running from Saturday 16 August to Sunday 16 November completes the magic lantern programme and gives visitors the opportunity to see recently discovered treasures of Southport – never been seen before.

On display will be magic lantern slides and early glass negatives that captures moments in time alongside previously unseen images of Southport, including a painting of Lord Street from the 1830s. This is a real treat for Sefton residents and visitors to enjoy.
