Mark Steel’s Back in Town at The Atkinson

‘He’s a man with a passionate desire to communicate his ideas, who is also very funny’ – The Guardian

‘Steel’s rapier wit cuts to the chase’ – The Observer

‘Excellent standup’ – The Times

Mark Steel brings his highly successful Radio 4 based show to The Atkinson on Saturday 25 October.

The ‘Mark Steel’s in Town’ show is based on the Radio 4 series in which he writes a show centred around each town, which has now been to at least 5 million places. It’s a sparkling verdict on humanity that he’s mocked them all and somehow is still alive.

He has stood behind a Londoner on a cliff in Dorset, who said to his wife “That lighthouse is getting on my bloody wick.” He has seen rivalries such as that in Corby, when he thanked a librarian for finding him a book and she replied ‘Yes, because here we’re not like those miserable arses from Kettering’. He has even read a book called ‘A History of the Railway in Didcot’ that starts “This book is in no way a history of the railway in Didcot.”

For this show Mark has found dozens more towns to humiliate, as well as pledging to discover what makes your own town ridiculous.

There will be pictures, and ranting, some people will call things out, and you’ll be a far better audience than the miserable arses from down the road.

As well as Mark Steel’s In Town, Mark has presented the BAFTA nominated Mark Steel Lectures for BBC2, is a regular on BBC One’s Have I Got News For You and Radio 4’s Newsquiz. He’s also appeared on BBC2’s QI and Room 101. He’s written several, acclaimed books, including: Reasons To Be Cheerful and What’s Going On and he writes a weekly column for The Independent.

Mark Steel’s Back in Town Show can be seen at The Atkinson on Saturday 25 October at 8pm. Tickets are priced at £15 and are availableonline at or by calling the Box Office on 01704 533333. You can also purchase your tickets over the counter during The Atkinson’s opening hours.

About The Atkinson

The Atkinson is Southport’s beautiful new home for music, theatre, art, poetry, literature and history, right in the middle of Lord Street in Southport. Significant investment has been made in refurbishing the stunning 19th century buildings, to create a really welcoming multi art-form venue with a strong contemporary feel.

The Atkinson offers an exciting and varied destination for families, cultural tourists and arts enthusiasts alike, with a full day and night time offer. Wile the day away visiting the new shop, that sells gifts and contemporary crafts from regional makers and then relax in the Bakery, choosing from a selection of artisan bread sandwiches, cakes and sharing platters. You can even take little bit of The Atkinson home with you from the delicatessen. Wonder through the major exhibitions and see performances from some of the UK’s foremost musicians, actors, performers and companies, films, family activities and much more.

In October 2014 The Atkinson becomes something even more exciting for visitors, with the opening of the museum which will tell the story of Southport and Sefton as well as the area’s dramatic maritime history. It will also be the new home for the Goodison Egyptology Collection, a remarkable collection of archaeology that has not seen for over 40 years.
