Christmas at The Atkinson

Running alongside its normal busy event and exhibition programme for the festive period The Atkinson is offering Snowflake Arts & Crafts, a Victorian Magic Lantern Christmas Show, classic Ballet with Swan Lake, Carols and Capers with Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band a Christmas Arts & Craft market, plus free family films and even a visit from Santa!

The programme begins on Saturday 22 November with the Christmas Arts & Craft Market in partnership with Capstan’s Bazaar from 11am to 4pm. During the day there will be free family Christmas Crafts delivered by Southport Contemporary Artists, and create your own funny Queen Knickers bags in the children’s library (12pm-2pm) inspired by the performance of The Queen’s Knickers at 2.30pm (suitable for ages 3+).

Andrew Gill returns to tell us tales of old with his popular Victorian Magic Lantern Christmas Show on Sunday 30 November at 2.30pm. Using an original showman’s magic lantern and hand painted slides he illustrates Victorian life and tells humorous and tear-jerking stories about how audiences were entertained at Christmas over one hundred years ago.

We invite you for Cake & Choral on Monday 1 December at 1pm. Voices of Hope, a six-piece a cappella group from Liverpool Hope University perform a wide repertoire from madrigals and part songs to arrangements of traditional and popular music. Come along and listen and then enjoy a talk with the musicians, a slice of cake and a cup of tea all for £10.

Saturday 7 December is a busy one for families. Santa pays us a visit 11am-1pm so make sure you tell him what you want for Christmas. In the children’s library little ones can listen to A Snowy Storytime, 11.30am & 12.30pm and take part in the Make Your Own Christmas Snowflakes, 12pm-1pm. You can choose to help decorate the library with them, or take them home.

The family fun continues at 2pm with a screening of the Christmas children’s classic animated adventure The Snowman and The Snowman and The Snow dog double-bill. Tickets are just £3 for both films or £2 for one.

After the success of the Liverpool Philharmonic Lunchtime Concerts, The Atkinson is launching a new series of lunchtime Cake & Classical Music concerts from Monday 8 December at 1pm. They will then continue on the first Monday of every month throughout the January to April Season. The first concert is with L’Orchestra dell’Arte Wind Quartet. Come along and listen and then enjoy a talk with the musicians, a slice of cake and a cup of tea all for £10.

After their previous sell-out performances at The Atkinson, Ballet UK return on Thursday 11 December with Swan Lake and we have seasonal Carols and Capers with Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band on Saturday 13 December. If this is not enough then you can also see a live screening of the Bolshio Ballet present The Nutcracker on Saturday 21 December, tickets £10. Please note: this event is a live screening and not live ballet.
