The Kate Daniels Quartet UK tour arrives at The Atkinson on Wednesday 12 November for an evening of ‘Jazz noir’.

Kate Daniels’ original career in music began in the late ‘80s when she sang in a range of national productions, and despite singing everything from close harmony a capella to jump-jive swing and even AC/DC covers, she quickly found a love for jazz that endures to this day.

Having returned to singing over the past three years following a break, she has again established herself firmly on the UK’s jazz circuit as a classy and talented performer both on stage and on record, as evidenced by the release of her recent album Atmospherics.

The album is well named; Daniels describes it as ‘jazz noir’, inspired by the unique atmosphere conjured by black-and-white film soundtracks from the ‘50s, such as Miles Davis’ score for L’Ascenseur pour L’Echafaud. She skilfully crafts a cool, laid-back style that brilliantly recalls the smoky sound of such great classic jazz singers as Peggy Lee or Julie London – her Quartet swing through their material with such ease that you could be forgiven for thinking the songs were their own, but Kate and her group put their own stamp on proceedings to deliver the goods with great flair and confidence.
