Come along to The Atkinson on Sunday 30 November and enjoy tales of Victorian life told through an original Magic Lantern.
Andrew Gill uses an original showman’s magic lantern and remarkable hand painted and photographic lantern slides, some of which are 170 years old, to illustrate Victorian life, telling humorous and tear jerking stories and show how audiences were entertained at Christmas time over one hundred years ago. The event includes stories told to children of Santa Claus and his visits on Christmas Eve.
A Victorian Magic Lantern Christmas Show for families ages 10 and above is a special event as part of The Atkinson’s Christmas programme.
Andrew Gill says “I use an original showman’s magic lantern and remarkable hand painted and photographic lantern slides to illustrate Victorian life and show how audiences were entertained over one hundred years ago. Contrary to popular belief, Victorians were amused (even if Queen Victorian wasn’t) and the show is funny and informative, with more than a few surprises.”
Andrew presents his magic lantern shows at museums and festivals throughout the North of England and also works with universities and television companies. His audiences are transported back through time with this technological wonder from the days before television and cinema.
Emma Lloyd, The Atkinson’s Marketing & Programme Manager said:
“After the huge success of Andrew’s Summer show as part of our Unseen Southport and Vintage programme, it was only right to bring him back for Christmas.
He is a fantastic storyteller who takes you back in time and entertains throughout. He will be using some of The Atkins’s own slides from our collection to tell tales of Santa and his visits on Christmas eve – and this is a lovely way for people to see, and be part of our collections, some of which are not on display. “
The Victorian Magic Lantern Christmas Show takes place on Sunday 30 November at 2.30pm.
