Take Over Day 2014

On 21st November 2014 The Atkinson was taken over by more than 100 young people from three local primary schools and Maghull High School. The event was part of Takeover Day – a nationwide event run by the independent charity Kids in Museums.

Takeover Day is a celebration of children and young people’s contribution to museums and galleries. It’s a day on which they are given the opportunity to take over their local venue, work alongside staff and promote young people’s voices in cultural settings.

The Atkinson worked in partnership with Sefton Music Hub to deliver a variety of creative workshops for local primary school pupils. They worked with Manchester Camerate, artist Sarah Jane Richards and a dance specialist from Maghull High School to develop their own creative responses to the BBC’s Ten Pieces through art, dance and sound.

The students from Maghull High School were given the opportunity to choose which areas of the venue they would like to work in and how they would like to ‘take over’ the museum. They chose to work with the Learning Officer and design their own museum trail, have a backstage tour of the theatre, work in the museum shop and perform live music in the museum foyer.

The pupils also chose to document the day themselves and created the short film below.

Look out for more young people taking over The Atkinson in 2015!
