The Atkinson’s Summer Lunchtime Cake & Classical Concerts are Announced

The Atkinson will continue to programme its lunchtime classical music programme Cake & Classical and has announced a new programme for summer 2015 that continues their relationship with L’Orchestra dell ‘Arte and begins a new one with the Northern Chamber Orchestra.

The Cake & Classical lunchtime series of 45 minute music concerts has been a huge success and continues to attract new and loyal audiences on the first Monday of every month.

Although this seasons programme comes to a close on Monday 6 April with L’Orchestra dell ‘Arte performing Dvorak’s ‘Serenade’, the new summer season now on sale is set to delight new and existing classical music fans.

The summer season will begin with a concert from the Northern Chamber Orchestra (NCO), one of the country’s top, professional chamber orchestras, which was formed in the 1960s. It has gained a formidable reputation for its engaging and exciting concerts. Its members are distinguished, professional chamber musicians.

The programme for Cake & Classical for April to August includes:

Monday 6 AprilL’Orchestra dell’Arte – Dvorak’s ‘Serenade’

This fantastic work for wind nonet plus cello and double bass was written in the key of D minor in 1878. It exudes the sounds and feelings of Dvorak’s Slavonic homeland and is a delight for both the players and their audiences.

The concert will be introduced by Edward Peak, Artistic Director for L’Orchestra dell’Arte.

Monday 4 MayNorthern Chamber Orchestra Beethoven String Quartet, Opus 95
Weber Clarinet Quintet.

A popular programme of two much-loved chamber works. This sublime duo of intimate ‘miracles’ includes a Beethoven Quartet, which is bursting with concentrated magnificence, and a mini-concerto from Weber, his delightful Quintet – both favourites of the chamber repertoire.

Monday 1 JuneL’Orchestra dell’Arte – Music for Cello & Piano

Duo Cathie Bunting and Stephanie Howard perform a repertoire for cello and piano. Come and hear if your favourites match theirs: will it be Bach, Beethoven or perhaps a new name?

Monday 6 JulyL’Orchestra dell’Arte – Relax with Sax

Today is all about classical saxophones. Peter Hill and Valerie Warr will play solos, duets and maybe a Trio and talk a little about the Family Sax. Some of the melodies will be familiar to you and you can see the range of saxes from baritone to soprano right up close.

Monday 3 AugustL’Orchestra dell’Arte – Hautbois with Helen & Howard

Today we feature the double reeds of the orchestral oboes and cor anglais in a mixed programme designed especially for Monday lunchtime.

The lunchtime Cake & Classical concerts start at 1pm and tickets are £10 (including cake and a cup of tea) and are available online at theatkinson.co.uk or by calling The Atkinson Box Office on 01704 533333. You can also purchase your tickets over the counter during The Atkinson’s opening hours.
