It’s Funny Festival Spooky Fun this Halloween at The Atkinson

This year the Southport Comedy Festival and The Atkinson have been putting their Halloween heads together to offer lots of events as part of the first Southport Children’s Comedy festival, which coincides with The Atkinson’s Kidsfest Children’s Festival and Halloween!

From Saturday 24 October in the run up to Halloween come and join Cartoonist Paul Hardman, Creation Station and the Playtown team for a morning of art and creativity. The spooky fun starts at 10.30am and runs to 12.30pm in The Art Box and around the building in the Children’s library, Foyer and level One. Just pop in! Ages 5+

From 12pm the Bakery will be having a Spooky Tea Party! Bring the family for lunch as we launch the new children’s menu and will be serving specially themed Halloween afternoon teas for all the family. With monstrous muffins, spooky sandwiches, creepy cakes, gingerbread ghosts and lots more!

After lunch come and make Spooky Bunting in The Atkinson Galleries. The session run by artist Sarah Richards will send shivers up your spine and begins at 1.30pm-3.30pm and is £4.50 per child / £3.50 for sibling / £3 extra adult (1 adult per child goes free).

Then in the afternoon we welcome ComedySportz, the North West’s top improvised comedy troupe for their first visit to The Atkinson.

Two teams battle it out for laughs as players create quick-witted sketches, scenes and songs from whatever suggestions are thrown at them by the audience. It’s a show that’s fast, feel good and always unpredictably funny. There’s a referee on hand to steer the entertainment, call any fouls and help the audience decide the winner. The show can’t start without you!

a non-stop stream of gags, sketches and general hilarity.” Lancashire Evening Post

“…real winners are the happy audience.. hilariously entertaining.”  Buxton Festival Fringe

Kids enjoyed the interactive nature of the show and were in fits of giggles all the way through.” Netmums

The whistle is blown for ComedySportz  on Saturday 24 October at 4.30pm, tickets are £8 (£6 children / £24 family). It is part of The Atkinson’s 3 for 2 on Children’s Theatre Offers this season. Book for 3 different shows and get the third free!

A free Young Persons Stand Up Comedy Workshop for ages 10-16 years takes place at The Atkinson on Sunday 25 October between 1pm and 3pm.

Are you a little comedian? Do you like making your mates laugh? Come and learn the ropes from a professional comic in this fun and friendly workshop. You’ll develop some funny ideas, turn them into a short routine and learn how to use a microphone. Most importantly you’ll have a good laugh along the way! This event is part of The Southport Children’s Comedy Festival, please visit their website southportcomedyfestival.com to find out more  and to book your place. Please note places are limited .

On Saturday 31 October Blunderbus Theatre Company returns with their new show, just perfect for Halloween – My Pet Monster and Me. A big-hearted fairy-tale especially for little monsters aged 3 – 7, and their grown-ups. Told with magical songs, enchanting music and exquisite puppetry.

Sophie Bucket lives on a farm with her Dad. She spends all of her time day- dreaming, but most of her time alone. If only she had a little friend to share her adventures.

One day, Sophie finds an egg. She keeps it warm, and out pops a cuddly, toothy, burpy, baby MONSTER! And this is when the fun begins.
Join us down on the farm for adventures with Sophie and her new friend George, the most lovable monster in the land!

My Pet Monster and Me starts at 2.30pm on Saturday 31 October, tickets are £8 (£6 children / £24 family). It is part of The Atkinson’s 3 for 2 on Children’s Theatre Offers this season. Book for 3 different shows and get the third free!

The Atkinson would like to thank its Kidsfest media sponsors Mumsintheknow.co.uk and Southport Visitor for their support.

Kidsfest takes place every year during October half term. It is a chance for The Atkinson to showcase its leading offer for families across the Museum, Galleries, Theatre, Library and free arts and craft activities.

About The Atkinson

The Atkinson is Southport’s beautiful new home for music, theatre, art, poetry, literature and history, right in the middle of Lord Street in Southport. Significant investment has been made in refurbishing the stunning 19th century buildings, to create a really welcoming multi art-form venue with a strong contemporary feel.

The Atkinson offers an exciting and varied destination for families, cultural tourists and arts enthusiasts alike, with a full day and night time offer. Wile the day away visiting the new shop, that sells gifts and contemporary crafts from regional makers and then relax in the Bakery, choosing from a selection of artisan bread sandwiches, cakes and sharing platters. You can even take little bit of The Atkinson home with you from the delicatessen. Wander through the major exhibitions and see performances from some of the UK’s foremost musicians, actors, performers and companies, films, family activities and much more.
The new Museum is now open. Sefton Between Land & Sea tells the story of Southport and Sefton as well as the area’s dramatic maritime history. While Discover Ancient Egypt – the new Egyptology Gallery is the home of the  Goodison Egyptology Collection, a remarkable collection of archaeology that has not been seen for over 40 years.
