The Arts Society – Peggy Guggenheim by Alexandra Epps

The Arts Society – Peggy Guggenheim by Alexandra Epps

The Atkinson welcome Alexandra Epps, in this second lecture from The Arts Society.

This lecture is about the ‘poor little rich girl’ who changed the face of the twentieth-century art, Peggy Guggenheim. Not only was Peggy Guggenheim ahead of her time but she was the woman who helped define it. She discovered and nurtured a new generation of artists producing a new kind of art. Through collecting not only art but the artists themselves, her life was as radical as her collection.

Born to the wealthy New York City Guggenheim family, she was the daughter of Benjamin Guggenheim, who went down with the Titanic in 1912, and the niece of Solomon R. Guggenheim, who established the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is one of the most important museums in Italy for European and American art of the first half of the 20th century. Pieces in her collection embrace CubismSurrealism and Abstract Expressionism.

Alexandra Epps’ background is in design having practised as a graphic designer running her own design consultancy for many years. She established Art in the City and her credits include Official Guide to the City of London, Guide and Lecturer at Tate Modern and Tate Britain and a Freeman of the City of London.
The Arts Society is a leading art education charity, which brings people together through a shared curiosity for the arts.
