Paddle Dolls in Ancient Egypt: Gaudy or Godly?

An Online Talk by Megan Clark, University of Liverpool

Paddle Dolls are wooden figurines excavated from ancient Egyptian tombs that have a very distinct set of decorations and styles. These figurines are only seen within a few hundred years of Egyptian history and appear to show artistic autonomy and personal preferences of either their creator or eventual owner.

In this online talk, Megan will be discussing what makes a paddle doll so unique, the controversies that surround them, as well as the three paddle dolls in The Atkinson’s own collection which are able to highlight the way in which they would have first been created.
