Paper artist Suhail Shaikh is currently designing and making a scale model of a Spitfire Vb AB273 sculpture that will be on display as part of the Courage & Devotion exhibition at The Atkinson which opens 26 June 2021.
- Skinning the wings. Underside. Wheel wells. Stringers added to support the large paper surfaces.
- Skinning weighted and pinned down for an even finish.
- Hooks trued out for balance, resistance, sturdiness. Of course we will use cable, wire or an equivalent with more discrete detailing. We should chat about this.
- The Hispano Suiza cannon barrels and their fairings under construction. Yes, knitted…
- The whole shape taking shape… Spinner on to complete the silhouette. Ailerons on too.
- Wheels from layers of foam board to keep them light.
- Undercarriage doors
- Wheels sanded down to the tyre’s shape
- Dummy fit…
- Box of goodies parts to be fitted
- Not comfortable working this way. Proof that the Sistine chapel legend is questionable.
- Taking shape
Next- building the cockpit canopy mould out of mdf and then sourcing a vaccuum former to mould it.
Wings removal and priming to paint.
Fuselage unhooked and turned over for detailing.
Fuselage underside primed and painted.
Underside finishing wear and tear.
Masking, painting..
So on and so forth! It’s a race!!
