Galkoff’s and the Secret Life of Pembroke Place (Object of the Month)

An online talk Dr Liz Stewart, Museum of Liverpool

Galkoff`s in Liverpool was built around 1820, originally as a dwelling house then later as a hardware shop. It was then a furniture shop before becoming a kosher butcher’s in 1907.

It was once the heart of the Jewish community in Liverpool in an area that was often referred to as ‘Little Hell’ by the local papers.

The frontage of Galkoff’s was saved by Liverpool Museum and is now on public display. In this talk Liz will be looking at the story of Galkoff’s and some of the fascinating stories of Pembroke Place, Liverpool.

This online talk was first presented 14 April 2021 as part of The Atkinson’sObject of the Month series of free talks.
