Families are at the heart of The Atkinson. A range of interactive displays and creative activities have been designed to help visitors of all ages have fun whilst exploring our free art gallery and museum. Check our family listings for regular Interactive Storytelling sessions, Make it! craft workshops and Young Curator Summer Sessions throughout the school holidays. In the theatre, dare to encounter the dangers and delights of Dinosaur World Live (4–6 Aug) in a roarsome interactive show. Prepare yourself to experience history with all the nasty bits left in, Horrible Histories: Terrible Tudors (16–17 Sep) is live on stage!
Get ready to dive into a rabbit hole of the best jokes in the world. Star of Live at the Apollo and sell-out sensation Gary Delaney (23 Jul) returns to The Atkinson this summer. In David Harper’s Romp With The Georgians (8 Sep) the BBC TV antiques presenter and historian tells funny, outrageous and dastardly historical stories our history teachers didn’t tell us!
China Crisis (12 Aug), with singer Gary Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon, bring their exquisitely melancholy post-punk sound to The Atkinson. Blues-based ‘groove’ band Sam Kelly’s Station House (10 Sep) are influenced by New Orleans second line, soul, jazz and British funk. On the first Monday of every month at 1pm Cake & Classical Music presents a lunchtime concert with a slice of cake! On the first Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm, join Grateful Fred’s for a wonderful night of Americana & Roots music.
Relive the sights and sounds of musical greats. Be Bop A Lula (22 Jul) presents a non-stop hits tour through 1950s Rock‘n’Roll starring Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Billy Fury and Buddy Holly. The Unravelling Wilburys (19 Aug) play songs from the famous five icons; Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. Come shake a tail feather as Totally Tina (24 Sep) takes you ‘River Deep, Mountain High’ and to ‘Nutbush City Limits’ and back with this incredible show.
You can find a range of handmade items from local artists in The Atkinson’s shop. Our award-winning café, A Great Little Place, are passionate about great coffee and delicious fresh food. The Atkinson is also home to Southport Library who offer a range of services to the local community as well as tourist information.
