Artemis by John Collier

An online talk with Dr Gina Muskett, The University of Liverpool.

John Maler Collier was a portrait painter who touched many. He was one of the twenty-four founders of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style, and was one of the most prominent portrait painters of his generation.

Artemis was the Greek goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, the Moon, and chastity. Collier has chosen to depict her in the Greek classical art style as a maiden huntress, young, tall, and slim, clothed in a girl’s short skirt with a quiver, a bow and arrows.

Dr Gina Muskett will be looking at the story behind the artist and the beautiful painting of Artemis part of The Atkinson’s collection.
