Discovering and Recreating Liverpool Museum’s Hittite Gallery (1931 – 1941)
Talk by Dr Alan Greaves, University of Liverpool
One of the many buildings hit in the May Blitz was Liverpool City Museum, and one of the galleries which was destroyed at the museum was the Hittite Gallery.
The Hittite Gallery contained casts and artefacts from the excavations of University of Liverpool archaeologist Professor John Garstang. However, in the Blitz attack, the museum was hit and all of the casts were destroyed.
John Garstang, the first Professor of Archaeology at the University of Liverpool from 1907 to 1941, was responsible for re-discovering the virtually forgotten ancient Hittite civilization when he was excavating in south east Turkey between 1908 and 1911.
Dr Alan Greaves, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Liverpool will be coming along to talk about the lost gallery and the excavations of John Garstang.
