The Mysteries of ‘The Triumph of Art’ by the French Baroque artist Nicolas-Pierre Loir (1624-1679)

A Talk by Xanthe Brooke

The recent restoration of one of the paintings in The Atkinson’s collection, ‘The Triumph of Art’, was funded by Chateau de Sceaux and The Art Society funded a new frame.

After the restoration, the painting by French Baroque artist Nicolas-Pierre Loir (1624-1679) was triumphantly displayed in France at Chateau de Sceaux as part of their programme ‘Les Colbert, ministres et collectionneurs‘.

In this talk, Xanthe Brooke (Honorary Research Curator, National Museums Liverpool), discusses this mysterious allegorical portrait.

Who does it portray? What does it mean? And how did it get to Southport in the 19th century?

Object of the Month

Taking place on the second Wednesday of every month at 1pm, our Object of the Month talks put different objects from our collections in to the spot light. Each month the talks focus on a different object from paintings, print and sculpture to craft, costume and ceramics.

As well as exploring objects from our art collections Object of the Month will also reveal the hidden histories of objects from our fascinating Social History, Maritime and Egyptology collections. The programme is delivered by Museum and Gallery staff as well as a wide range of outside expert speakers.

Object of the Month talks are free and there is no need to book, just come along! If you wish to donate money to The Atkinson Development Trust at the end of any talk there will be donation buckets available.
