What did it take to make a Victorian laugh? The Victorians are often accused of being ‘not amused’ but this exhibition will reveal that they actually loved to laugh.
Discover what made Queen Victoria and her subjects smile, from comic cartoons and saucy songs, to pun-filled joke books and theatrical entertainments from some of the ‘Greatest Showmen’ of the age. Marvel at the ‘Great Wall of Jokes’, pit your wits against Victorian conundrums, and see some of the first comedy caught on film.
Roll up, Roll up to see PT Barnum The Greatest Showman’s hat and uncover the surprising history of humour in the nineteenth century.
Curated by Dr Bob Nicholson, Dr Andrew McInnes and Dr Laura Eastlake of Edge Hill University.
