Chasing Owls launch Grateful Fred’s programme at The Atkinson

Grateful Fred’s – the established roots and acoustic night from Formby is set to call The Atkinson its new home from December and Chasing Owls, the “World-class indie folk” band (BBC R1)  are the first band to perform as part of the new programme.

Grateful Fred’s has been pioneering Americana and Roots music in Formby for almost 4 years and during that time have presented some of the best US, Canadian and World artists building a large and loyal audience who have enjoyed great nights of wonderful live acoustic music.

For the first night of Grateful Fred’s at The Atkinson we welcome Chasing Owls – a British indie-folk band formed in Edinburgh in early 2010. The band consists of Ben Sunderland, Naomi Black, James Moir and Callum Bateman.

Their first EP ‘We Began’ enjoyed general critical acclaim and extensive press coverage at both a regional and national level with repeated airplay across BBC Radio 1, Radio 2 and 6 Music complemented by coverage from The Scotsman, BBC Radio Scotland, Central FM and Absolute Radio.

The band concentrated on a busy summer of festivals in 2011 including Belladrum, NME Weekender and Wickerman Festivals. This saw increased popularity throughout Scotland and helped encourage wider UK touring. Entitled ‘Quell’, Chasing Owls’ second record is a four-track EP that was released in late May 2012.

The Grateful Fred’s Roots and Acoustic nights are informal, fun and as well as being hosted by the Grateful Fred’s House Band also include another UK or local act as well as the headliner. On Wednesday 4 December this is Chasing Owls, Wednesday 8 JanuaryThe Toy Hearts, Wednesday 5 FebruaryThe Stray Birds, Wednesday 5 March – Hannah Aldridge and Wednesday 2 AprilRita Hosking.

The fun starts at 8pm with The Grateful Fred’s Band, followed but the support at 8.30pm. After a 20 minute interval we welcome the headlining act.
