Family Friendly Fun at The Atkinson This Half Term

Family Friendly Fun at The Atkinson This Half Term

The February Half Term is a busy one for The Atkinson with the opening of the new exhibition Matisse: Drawing with Scissors. Late Works 1950-1954. A beautiful re-telling of Red Riding Hood, Workshops, free Victorian Tales in the library and more!

Matisse: Drawing with Scissors features 35 lithographic prints of his famous cut-outs including The Snail and the Blue Nudes. The exhibition runs from 15 February – 16 March. Families can be part of the exhibition too, by joining us for the FREE Drawing with Scissors family friendly workshop on Monday 17 February running from 11am-2pm.

This FREE workshop uses Henri Matisse’s technique of collage and cut-outs to create small pieces for children to take home, as well as producing a huge piece of art for the gallery. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

On Thursday 20 February at 2pm Horse + Bamboo present a gorgeously rendered re-telling of the classic girl-and-the-wolf tale. Exquisite visuals blend with pantomime-style silliness and spooky moments to create an enchanting piece of theatre. Ideal for all ages over 4.

A young girl, a hungry wolf, and a walk through the woods – it sounds like a recipe for disaster, but Red Riding Hood’s not scared… well maybe she’s a little bit scared. The story that everybody knows – or do they?

Tickets for Red Riding Hood are on sale now and are £7.50 adult and £5.50 children. Why not join us for an exciting and creative hand puppet workshop, inspired by the production? Children are invited to use their imaginations and make their own hand puppet to take home.

The hand puppet workshop starts from 1pm to 1.45pm in The Art Box within the galleries to give people time to then go and see the production afterwards. Places are limited so please do book early!

Why not make a day of it and have a bite to eat in the Bakery?  A children’s lunch is just £3.50 and includes half an artisan sandwich, crisps a drink and either a cup of soup or vegetable sticks and houmous.

The Red Riding Hood Theatre, workshop and lunch package for children is just £10 and the theatre, workshop package £7. To book or for more information please visit our box office or call them on 01704 533333.

The storytelling continues on Friday 21 February between 10.30am and 12pm with Victorian Fun and Fairy Tales for Families in the children’s library with some FREE traditional toys and games mixed together with tales of wonder from a Victorian storyteller.

Try to keep the Jolly Sailor happy and work out what’s happening in the zoetrope then join in or just relax and listen to stories of heroes, mermaids, fools and wise animals.  It’s good old fashioned fun! Suitable for 3-12 years, but adults will enjoy it too! Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets for Red Riding Hood and its workshop are on sale now and available online at theatkinson.co.uk or by calling The Atkinson box office on 01704 533333. You can also purchase your tickets over the counter during The Atkinson’s opening hours.

*Please be advised there is a £2 booking fee for booking over the phone and online bookings
