Folk legends Fairport to visit Southport

Legendary folk band Fairport Convention is back at The Atkinson on Thursday 6 March as part of their 2014 Winter Tour.

Fairport Convention remains one of the most entertaining bands on the live music scene and their annual Winter Tour has become a much-loved cultural institution. As well as the Southport concert the tour will visit over two dozen other venues in England, Wales and Scotland.

Singer and guitarist Simon Nicol who co-founded Fairport Convention in 1967 says:

“We always enjoy visiting Southport and The Atkinson is a great place to play.

As a band, we always look to the future, and after nearly fifty years on the road we still really look forward to getting out there to play in front of audiences. Although we regularly record new albums our first love remains live performance.”

Fairport Convention constantly introduces new material to its repertoire as well as drawing on a vast back catalogue. Every tour features a unique programme of music and The Atkinson’s concert will feature a mix of material from Fairport’s most recent albums as well as classics from the band’s early years. As a bonus, there will also be brand new songs destined for Fairport’s next studio album.

The concert will open with a short opening solo set from talented singer/songwriter Edwina Hayes. Edwina has worked with Jools Holland, Nanci Griffith and Roger McGuinn among many others.

Formed in 1967’s ‘summer of love’, Fairport Convention has been delighting audiences for over four decades. Hailed as the originators of British folk-rock music, the band is still as vibrant and inventive as ever.

Fairport’s long and fascinating history has been the subject of a major BBC television documentary and their annual music festival at Cropredy has featured on Sky Arts 1. Fairport has also won a coveted BBC Lifetime Achievement Award and Radio 2 listeners voted Fairport’s groundbreaking album Liege & Lief ‘The Most Influential Folk Album of All Time’.

Fairport Convention’s concert at The Atkinson starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £20 and are available to book online at theatkinson.co.uk or through the Box Office on 01704 533333. Tickets are also available over the counter during The Atkinson opening hours.
