Beautiful classic ballet with a modern twist

Beautiful classic ballet with a modern twist

On Thursday 22 May at 8pm Ballet Black perform their new production of

A Dream within a Midsummer Night’s Dream at The Atkinson.

For their debut at The Atkinson the company are delighted to present a triple bill of new work with exciting ballets from two of Britain’s best choreographers, Christopher Marney (Gothenburg ballet, New Adventures) and Martin Lawrence, Richard Alston Dance company). Award winning dance maker, Arthur Pita (Showboat, The Metamorphosis) creates A Dream within a Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, Ballet Black’s newest narrative ballet.

Ballet Black is a professional ballet company for international dancers of black and Asian descent. They aim to bring ballet to a more culturally diverse audience with the aim of changing the number of black and Asian dancers in mainstream ballet companies, making Ballet Black wonderfully unnecessary.

Emma Lloyd, The Atkinson’s Marketing & Programme Manager said:

“We hope after the huge success of BalletBoyz in March, dance fans will continue to support The Atkinson to develop and nurture its dance audiences. This will help us to continue to bring the very best, top dance companies to Sefton.

Ballet Black are a beautiful company to watch and those that enjoyed Richard Alston and BalletBoyz will be enchanted.”

Founded in 2001 Ballet Black has achieved great success and garnered numerous awards, including the 2012 Critics Circle National Dance Award for Best Independent Company.

“This is repertory that any large company would be happy to own. And the heroic Ballet Black has managed it on a shoestring.” The Guardian, February 2014
