Simon Evans: Leashed UK Tour 2014 at The Atkinson

‘Never-less-than-hilarious view of the world. Laugh-out-loud stuff.’ Guardian Guide

‘Super-sharp dry wit’ Time Out May 2013

Following two total sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Festival and a hugely successful UK tour, star of C4’s Stand Up For The Week Simon Evans brings his critically acclaimed show Leashed on Saturday 19 April.

Like most men of his age and delusion, Simon Evans dreams of striking out into The Wild and slipping the surly bonds of suburbia.  He remembers, inaccurately, a youth spent drifting like a Home Counties Kerouac through the great European arterial transport thoroughfares, bonding, if not with tribal herdsmen, then at least with truck drivers and the occasional Foreign legionnaire deserter.  Living on his wits (which is to say, thieving) coping Britishly with strange and confusing sexual advances, and waking up each day with the sunrise, no matter how carefully he attempted to construct some kind of rudimentary curtaining around his head before turning in for the night on some dismal piece of disregarded municipal verge or other. He remembers, and he yearns.

So what does Simon do, in an effort to reconnect with the spontaneity of his former, unburdened self? He buys a dog. Idiot.

Come and hear what will be at the very least a useful corrective to the growing swell of earnest middle class “Wilderness” literature written by men who tramp off into the woods to spend the night in the root bole of a storm-toppled fir and are able to tell you what kind of owl it was that that did that on them, as if that’s any kind of way for a grown up to behave.

It’s not all husband, Dad and dog duties on the horizon for Simon though, as one of his upcoming adventures involves climbing Everest, along with five other comedians and fifty comedy fans. In October, he’ll be part of the Stand Up On Everest trek, which will raise money for Save the Children and aim to set a new record by performing the world’s highest stand-up gig.

A familiar voice on BBC Radio 4, Simon is a regular on The News Quiz, The Unbelievable Truth, Armando Iannucci’s Charm Offensive and anchored and wrote seven series of the news satire The Way It Is.

He has appeared on numerous shows including: Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC), The Apprentice: You’re Fired! (BBC) and Mock the Week (BBC).   He is also a prolific writer for radio and tv, his credits include: Not Going Out (BBC1) and 8 Out Of 10 Cats (C4) amongst many others.

He appeared on University Challenge: The Professionals in 2007.  Simon was a contestant on Celebrity Mastermind, where his specialist was Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance, and he’s recently appeared on BBC1’s Live At The Apollo.

About The Atkinson

The Atkinson is Southport’s beautiful new home for music, theatre, art, poetry, literature and history, right in the middle of Lord Street in Southport. Significant investment has been made in refurbishing the stunning 19th century buildings, to create a really welcoming multi art-form venue with a strong contemporary feel.

The Atkinson offers an exciting and varied destination for families, cultural tourists and arts enthusiasts alike, with a full day and night time offer. Wile the day away visiting the new shop, that sells gifts and contemporary crafts from regional makers and then relax in the Bakery, choosing from a selection of artisan bread sandwiches, cakes and sharing platters. You can even take little bit of The Atkinson home with you from the delicatessen. Wonder through the major exhibitions and see performances from some of the UK’s foremost musicians, actors, performers and companies, films, family activities and much more.

In October 2014 The Atkinson becomes something even more exciting for visitors, with the opening of the museum which will tell the story of Southport and Sefton as well as the area’s dramatic maritime history. It will also be the new home for the Goodison Egyptology Collection, a remarkable collection of archaeology that has not seen for over 40 years.
