The Southport Cubs Takeover The Atkinson

The Southport Cubs took part in the very first Takeover Weekend at The Atkinson on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 March.

139 cubs and their leaders from nine Packs came from across Southport to take part in numerous different activities that led them to all corners of The Atkinson.

Arriving on Friday 20 March the cubs watched Night at the Museum followed by a special quiz about the film. After drinks and snacks they then had bedtime stories and slept in Southport library.

The specially designed activities gained the particular badges including; the Entertainer, the Artist, Book Reader, Collector and Local Knowledge Badge.

Nathan Barry, Assistant District Commissioner for Scouting in Southport said:

With 139 Cub Scouts attending it was no mean feat to make sure all were well fed, watered and occupied over the 2 days but the staff at The Atkinson Southport offered a unique and brilliant event for all involved!

After a film in the studio it was time to find spaces for everyone to sleep in the Atkinson Library. After watching ‘Night at the Museum’ it couldn’t have been more exciting!

Throughout the Saturday the Cubs where involved in a host of sessions led by the brilliant staff at The Atkinson. Whether it was singing on the main stage, taking a tour of the art archives, getting to look behind the scenes of a working theatre, working in the library or learning about the history of Southport the Cubs who attended had the opportunity to be part of something that was new to them.

A fantastic overnight experience and action packed day made for some very tired, yet overwhelmingly happy, Cubs and leaders alike. My thanks must go to the whole team who supported the organisation and running of this event.”

The Saturday closed with all 139 Cubs on stage singing to an auditorium filled with proud parents and leaders. Tired Cubs were then given a goody bag to remember their experience at The Atkinson.

Emma Lloyd, Marketing & Programme Manager said:

The Southport Cubs Takeover weekend was a huge success. The 139 cubs that joined in the fun were a pleasure and thoroughly enjoyed their tailor-made weekend.

This was the first event of its kind that The Atkinson has done, but we will be looking at various models of Takeovers to suit different groups in the future.”
