Families are spoilt for choice this half term as The Atkinson has 3 festivals taking place for families to get stuck into!
It’s the busiest week of the year with Kidsfest, Southport Halloween Festival and we celebrate the best in children’s theatre with the long awaited regional children’s theatre festival – the Big Imaginations Festival!
Kidsfest is The Atkinson’s fun filled family week of events and activities. Once again we mix it up with things going on across the building with the FREE Make It! And Handling sessions, a gig for families, great stories on the stage, magic and Arty Aprons are back in the Galleries to help you explore the exhibitions.
Seeing as it is Halloween it’s only fitting to bring monsters into the mix with Monstersaurus. The brand new show from the creators of Aliens Love Underpants that is monster-ously good!
Follow the young inventor Monty as he creates a whole world of whacky inventions and incredible monsters, but he has a problem – now he has made them all, what is he going to do with them?!
This energetic show full of thrills and spills, magic and mayhem will delight the whole family – with original music and plenty of audience participation. Just perfect for your own little monsters this half term!
Saturday 21 October is our Wizards,Witches, Ghosts & Ghouls Day here at The Atkinson – come along dressed up and get creative with Make It!, drop in on the Spooky Cartoon Workshop and Creation Trail 10.30am – 12.30pm with cartoonist Paul Hardman and Creation Station for a morning of art and creativity in association with Southport Comedy Festival & Southport BID.
We change pace with something a bit different on Monday 23 October, 2.30pm. David Gibb is back on a one-man mission to make brilliant, engaging and high quality music for families and children. Climb That Tree . David Gibb is guaranteed to have both parents and children singing along in no time, this is music that the whole family can enjoy together. Tuesday 24 October, 2.30pm we bring a bit of magic to the festival when time-travelling magicians Morgan & West return to the stage with a marvellous magic show full of crazy capers for the young, old, and everyone in-between! Expect the unexpected, believe the unbelievable, but do not dare miss the unmissable Morgan & West: More Magic for Kids! Ages 5+

Once upon a time, in a kingdom on top of the highest mountain in all the land, there lived a grouchy Queen, and her son, the Prince. The Prince was always getting in to trouble for slouching, running, burping, dancing and not behaving very princely at all! Happily Ever After comes to The Atkinson on Wednesday 25 October, 2.30pm Ages 5+This event is part of the Big Imaginations Festival.
Thursday 26 October, 11am, 1pm & 2.30pm we bring you the fantastic new work from Darren Pritchard Dance Body of Light, an interactive solo dance work using Kinect One motion sensor to control projected imagery to delight audiences. All Ages. Part of the Big Imaginations Festival.
Grannylocks / The Monstrous Duckling is for our younger audiences ages 3+ who enjoy stories coming to life! Friday 27 October, 12.45pm come and join our poetic storyteller as he unwinds the true stories behind the happily ever afters and discover they’re maybe not as charming as you remember!
Later that day at 3.30pm we tell creepy tales for the slightly children ages 6+ in Fairytales Gone Bad : Zombie-rella / Blood-red Hood. Both are part of the Big Imaginations Festival and are the perfect treat for Halloween!
Bringing brilliant theatre for children and families to the North West celebrate Big Imaginations Festival with us here at The Atkinson as we host a rich mix of shows with music, dance and stories from all over the world.
The Big Imaginations Festival is a welcoming festival. It recognises that families come in all shapes and sizes and we strive to make sure that everyone’s visit to the festival will be one to remember.

On Saturday 28 October, 2.30pm come and set sail on a wonderful adventure in a magical, musical adaptation based on the book by award-winning, bestselling picture book creator, Oliver Jeffers! Lost and Found tells the story of a boy that one day found a penguin at his door… The boy decides the penguin must be lost and tries to return him. But no one seems to be missing a penguin. So the boy decides to take the penguin home himself, and they set out in his row boat on a journey to the South Pole. But when they get there, the boy discovers that maybe home wasn’t what the penguin was looking for after all. Ages 3+
FREE Activities throughout the week include Arty Aprons every day, 11am – 3pm (subject to availability).Construction Club on Saturday 21 October, 10.30am – 12.30pm , where young inventors, creators and builders are invited to build and play with our Lego. Ages 5+
Story & Rhyme Time on Tuesday 24 & Wednesday 25 October, 10.30am – 11.30am and Thursday 26 October, 2pm – 3pm Ages 0 – 4
Don’t forget to drop into the Museum. Between Land and Sea tells the story of the many people who have lived and worked along our coast. Explore the history of the Sefton coast from prehistoric times to the present day showcasing the development of Sefton’s tourist towns of Southport and Birkdale, the outstanding natural habitats from Marshside to Formby Point and the major industrial port of Bootle.
Our exhibitions Why Look at Animals? and Adventures in Egypt – Mrs Goodison & Other Travellers are FREE to enter, all donations are welcome and help us to continue our work in the community to support local families and children.

Next year Kidsfest is moving! Due to such a busy October half term we are moving Kidsfest to February half term in 2018! So we get to do it all over again in just a few months.
