Independents Biennial 2018 – Sefton Commission

Independents Biennial is back with a festival that celebrates visual contemporary art across the entire Liverpool City Region. Working with galleries and studios around Merseyside to create a festival that is open to new and diverse audiences.

We have commissions covering all councils, and in Sefton we want to commission work that is guaranteed to engage new audiences. The commission is for £1000 to cover time and materials, towards a one-day event to take place outdoors on 28th July 2018.

The Atkinson in Southport will launch the annual Sefton Open exhibition on 28th July, and we hope to create a one off event in front of the gallery, in the iconic Princess Diana Gardens which centres on engagement.

Applications could include performance, talks, intervention, film screenings, projection or pop up installations, but must consider how the work will engage audiences in the written application.

Practitioners from all areas of visual art can apply, but it is preferred that applicants have a connection to Sefton (past or present, personal or professional) and we encourage applications from artists from diverse backgrounds with unique perspectives.

You may apply as a group, individual artists, or organisations.

To apply send:

  • 500 words outlining your proposed activity
  • A brief history of your practice (2-300 words)
  • Artists CV
  • Up to 5 images of your work (as .jpeg files each below 1MB)

Send applications to independents@artinliverpool.com by 9am on the 15th May 2018. Applications sent after this time will not be considered for commissions, but may still be considered for the open programme (details here).

Art in Liverpool are producing the four month festival with production partners including; Heart of Glass (St Helens), The Atkinson (Sefton), Williamson Art Gallery & Museum (Wirral), Knowsley Galleries & Museums (Knowsley), and Metal Liverpool (Liverpool), supported by Liverpool City Council, VAiL, Culture Liverpool and more to be announced.
