The Atkinson Wellbeing Choir

The Atkinson Wellbeing Choir

Every Tuesday 10.30 – 12.30pm at The Atkinson

The Atkinson in Southport is launching a new choir, open to all abilities for anyone over the age of 18.

As well as being fun and providing an opportunity to meet new friends, research has shown joining a choir improves your mental health, confidence and increases your sense of belonging.

All we ask is that you can commit to 2 hours a week to attend the Choir.

“Everyone loves music it’s a connector” says Caroline Darbyshire who is leading the choir, I have seen myself the benefits of being in a choir, it improves your memory and will help you gain confidence. There will be an opportunity to perform at next year’s Southport Festival if people want to!”

The choir is being funded by The Atkinson Development Trust and Liverpool CVS.

This fantastic project was inspired by The Atkinson’s Centre Officer Matt Dodd as part of The Atkinson Development Trust’s ‘Bright Spark’ initiative which invites staff to submit their ideas for audience-focused activities. Matt is a keen parkrun attender and has felt the benefits of running in a group, after watching the TV programme, Trust Me I’m a Doctor by Michael Mosley who demonstrated the benefits of singing in a choir were similar to running in a group. Matt wanted anyone to have the opportunity to feel the benefits of belonging.

“The Wellbeing Choir ensures anyone can experience the feel-good factor of group participation through singing in a choir

The first session is Tuesday 1 October, but anyone can join at any time, visit The Atkinson website or Southport library in The Atkinson to reserve your space.
