Apologies for this , the event has had to be cancelled
This talk will explore the changing nature of stardom, through a detailed analysis of the Elissa Landi portrait. It will start with an overview of Landi’s Hollywood career, including her roles in The Sign of The Cross (1932) and The Count of Monte Cristo (1934). Following this introduction, we will compare the image of Landi in this portrait to that of female stars from the current era. Does the Landi portrait anticipate the images of female stars in contemporary media? How is it different from the images of stars that circulate in today’s celebrity magazines? And, what can this comparison tell us about the evolution of stardom in the years since the portrait was painted?
