Course details:
Women in ancient Egypt were often depicted with pale skin, reflecting their ideal role as a mistress of the house, so shaded from the sun. This short course will examine the daily life of women in ancient Egypt, contrasting with the roles and representations of two Egyptian queens. Nefertiti was the great royal wife of Akhenaten and yielded much power and influence.  While Nefertari was the great royal wife of Ramesses II and was clearly cherished as seen in her tomb in the Valley of the Queens. Consideration will also be given to two local women, Mrs Anne Goodison and Marianne Brocklehurt. The artefacts they brought back from their travels to Egypt at the end of the 19th Century form the basis of the Egyptology collections at The Atkinson and West Park Museum, Macclesfield.
