A Talk by Anne Strathie


Join biographer Anne Strathie, author of ‘Herbert Ponting: Scott’s Antarctic Photographer and Pioneer Filmmaker’ (2021) on a journey looking at the life and career of Herbert Ponting.

From his early life working in a bank in Southport to his adventures in Burma, Korea, Java, China, India, Switzerland, Spain and finally the trip that he is most famous for recording, as part of The Terra Nova Expedition to the Antarctic in 1911 alongside Captain Scott.

Anne Strathie has written three biographies of members of Captain Scott’s ‘Terra Nova’ Antarctic expedition. Research for her books has taken her all over Britain and to Antarctica, New Zealand, Australia, America, Japan and Norway, including Spitsbergen.

Anne, who was brought up in Scotland, now lives in Gloucestershire, England, where she writes and researches on polar and other subjects and regularly gives talks and participates in events in Britain and overseas.

Anne will be signing copies of her book ‘Scott’s Antarctic Photographer and Pioneer Film Maker’ at the end of the talk.

Herbert Ponting: Explorer and Photographer

After years of taking photographs in America, Japan, other parts of Asia and in Europe, Herbert Ponting became and remains best-known for his work on Captain Scott’s Terra Nova expedition (1910-3).  This exhibition will be looking at his life and work with photographs from Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, alongside artefacts and research carried out by biographer Anne Strathie.
