Ten Plus Textiles was formed in 1991 by ten textile artists based in the North West who wanted to work together and promote an appreciation of embroidery in all its forms. Since then the group has grown in number to sixteen. Members have developed their own individual styles, through enthusiastic experimentation, using a range of techniques, but all have the common aim of working with fibres and fabric to promote a greater appreciation of contemporary textile art.
From fine hand and machine embroidery, patchwork, quilting and beadwork, to weaving, handmade felt and paper, collage and mixed media, the members create work that demonstrates both the aesthetics of modern design and the unique surface qualities of the decorative stitch. Their work is rich, luxurious and ornate in texture and colour and represents a fusion of traditional textile methods with original ideas and a contemporary twist.
The creative process can be a solitary experience and the group’s ethos is to support one another. In meeting together, there are resonances with the regional quilting groups set up during the 19th Century by miners’ wives, or the quilting and sewing bees of the women who colonised North America. Our conversations can cover a wide range of life experiences, which also informs our creative work.
As the expertise of the group continues to cover an increasingly wide range of disciplines, the group members feel that this diversity is their strength. What unifies them, however, is a fascination for the language of colour and texture, and the myriad ways in which these can be used to communicate moods and ideas. Their work includes framed pieces and hangings, three dimensional items, fashion accessories and jewellery.
