Christmas All Wrapped Up for Families at The Atkinson

Christmas All Wrapped Up for Families at The Atkinson

With Penguins, Snowmen, Snow Queen’s and Elves visiting,  The Atkinson is really getting into the spirit of Christmas with festive family shows for all ages this December.

On Saturday 12 December Honalee Media (Marty MacDonald’s Farm, Pongo’s Party) invite you to join the adventures with Dotty the Elf and Pompom the Penguin in Santa’s Christmas Cracker. A festive, interactive, song-filled visit to Santa’s home that helps them to discover the meaning of Christmas… before meeting Santa himself!

Every child wants to visit Father Christmas’s home at the North Pole and in Santa’s Christmas Cracker they can do just that – plus, in a special meet, greet and treat, each child will get the chance to receive a special gift from Father Christmas himself! Songs include all the favourites Jingle Bells, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Twelve Days Of Christmas and many, many more! Santa’s Christmas Cracker is a family Christmas show particularly suitable for 2-7 year-olds – HO-HO-HO! The performance lasts for 40 minutes (approx.) and is followed by a meet, greet and treat with Santa.

Santa’s Christmas Cracker takes place on Saturday 12 December at 11.30am and 2.30pm at The Atkinson. Tickets: £8 (£6.50 children / £25 family)

On Saturday 19 December, 2.30pm  The Atkinson presents a modern twist on the Hans Christian Anderson classic Snow Queen, blending live action with film, puppetry and digital storytelling.

A young girl goes on a journey to find her friend. Along the way she meets talking flowers, nosey birds, a grumpy reindeer and other magical creatures who help her find her strength to battle with Snow Queen, a shape-shifting icy goddess who represents all that you want most in the world.

Making seasonal storytelling relevant to young people and their families living in the modern world, audiences are promised an experience that combines the everyday miracles of technology with puppetry and spirited human performances.

Aimed at audiences of 7 years old and up, there is promise of light-hearted fun as Gerda meets with talking flowers, nosey birds, a grumpy reindeer and other magical creatures on her way. As well as remarkable visuals, an impressive cast of puppets and an original musical score, expressive movement from a cast of five will keep young eyes transfixed.

Writer, Philip Osment and director, Jonathan McGrath along with a team of innovative theatre creatives including designer Jane Linz Roberts, puppeteer Liz Walker, musician Semay Wu and digital artists Cubic Flowers have combined technologies to revive this sage fable of childhood curiosity, misplaced trust and unbreakable friendship.

“Upon entering the theatre it’s clear that Z-arts have really gone to town on this year’s Christmas offering.” – Nikki Cotter,

Snow Queen is showing at The Atkinson on Saturday 19 December at 2.30pm.

The Christmas programme continues on Sunday 20 December when Blunderbus Theatre Company (Duck in a Truck, My Pet Monster) return with their delightful new festive show, Santa’s Little Helper.

Young Albert Tuttle is nearly 7 years old, – far too old to believe in Santa! How does a big fat man wearing bright red pyjamas fit down the chimney, anyway?

But, Albert is in for a big surprise. For as he sleeps on Christmas Eve, a big fat man wearing bright red pyjamas tumbles down his chimney like a roly-poly pudding. It’s Santa, – he’s come for Albert’s help!

With an irresistible blend of music, puppetry and high energy storytelling, lots of laughs, sing-along songs and plenty of opportunities to join in along the way.  This is the perfect treat for Christmas. Oh, and the chance to meet Santa himself!

Little people aged 3-7 will love this heart-warming tale but big people will have lots of fun, too. This is a funny, festive adventure with a very happy ending. Guaranteed to have your spirits flying higher than Rudolph!

Santa’s Little Helper is at The Atkinson on Sunday 20 December at 2.30pm.

Tickets for Snow Queen and Santa’s Little Helper are £8 (£6 children / £24 family).

Christmas would not be Christmas without The Snowman (U).  Watching the animated classic has become a tradition across the UK and all ages look forward to each year.  The Atkinson is delighted to be able to be creening The Snowman on Monday 21 December at 2.30pm.  Tickets are only £2!

Based on the book The Snowman by Raymond Briggs the musical animation made the song Walking in the Air a Christmas staple. It tells the adventure of a young English boy who makes a snowman one Christmas Eve, only for it to come to life that night and take him on a magical adventure to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus.

Don’t forget to visit the galleries, Discover Ancient Egypt gallery and the Museum this Christmas. With lots of interactive displays and activities you can get up close and personal with the artefacts and enjoy a free day out!

The Atkinson’s Shop is full of unique gifts, including specially crafted and one-off pieces of jewellery, vintage purses, bags, scarves and more . Come and have a little look – you will be surprised at what you find!

If that’s not enough, the Bakery will be serving lots of festive treats in the run up to Christmas so pop in and re-charge your batteries before you continue your Christmas shopping! Look out for a voucher offering 10% off in the Bakery and the Shop until Christmas Eve.
