Those of us who were lucky enough to be at Grateful Fred’s in August 2023 will remember what an absolutely brilliant sell-out evening we had when Martin Stephenson performed for us Fredheads. He was so entertaining, so funny and gave us one of the best Grateful Fred nights ever.

Well, as soon as the show was over, Grateful Fred was straight on the phone with Martin’s management and booked him to appear again to help us celebrate the Christmas edition of the Grateful Fred Nights here at The Atkinson.

Here’s a little bit more about Martin…

Martin Stephenson began his career as a busker at age 15. He then spent three years plying his trade as a guitar player in various bands in the North East of England. But Martin wanted more, he wanted to tell stories of his own and he was quickly developing ways of doing just that.

He developed his song-writing technique by firstly learning a few licks from a Spanish guitar book and repeated the process with Jazz, Blues, Country, SkifFle, Reggae etc. Eventually, this glorious collision of styles would become the trademark which Martin has carried through his career of almost 40 years.

Martin formed his band The Daintees, who became busking sensations and were signed by Kitchenware at around the same time as Prefab Sprout and Hurrah! The band, and indeed Martin, have always been known for their incredible range of styles, each album covering a multitude of genres, tempos and moods. The Daintees went on to release four critically acclaimed albums between 1986 & 1992; Boat To Bolivia, Gladsome Humour and Blue, Salutation Road, and The Boys Heart.

Martin has since supported himself through a combination of extensive live work and a multitude of self-financed solo albums.

2000 saw the reformation of the Daintees, and to this day Martin splits his time between solo and small collaborative projects with band albums and annual celebratory Daintees UK tours.

So, that’s the “official” description of Martin’s career to date. However, the “unofficial” version of all that is…he’s brilliant.

The last time Martin performed for us it was a sell-out, so, to be sure you do not miss out on what will be one of the stand-out shows of the year be sure to book early. You’ll have a ball.

Supporting Martin will be:

Mark Saunders

The August 2023 Grateful Fred Night when Martin Stephenson headlined, also saw the debut at Grateful Fred’s of his friend and former management client, Mark Saunders. Like Martin, Mark gave us a great set of original songs and stories and we are delighted to have him join Martin once again.

Here’s a little background to Mark’s and Grateful Fred’s friendship:

In a previous life Grateful Fred was a partner in a music management company, Discovery Management, and Mark was a client of that company as a member and principal songwriter of the successful duo BND, known for its catchy melodies and insightful lyrics. Together with his former bandmate, the band achieved critical acclaim in the UK and Europe, particularly in Germany, with their album and single releases.

Mark’s solo music reflects his love of storytelling and his desire to connect with audiences on a deep level. His songs are full of life and energy, and his lyrics are both clever and heartfelt.

Mark has appeared and performed on countless TV and radio shows and live gigs and major festivals throughout the UK and Europe. He has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in music including “The Backstreet Boys” and “Take That” amongst many others.

Mark’s return appearance at Grateful Fred’s is particularly special for Grateful Fred himself, as he and Mark enjoyed some totally unique experiences during the lifetime of the band.

Opening the evening will be:
