Grateful Fred’s: Americana & Roots Music
Share:

Grateful Fred’s have been pioneering Americana and Roots music in Formby, Southport and Liverpool since 2010 and during that time have presented some of the best US, Canadian and World artists.

On the first Wednesday of every month, join the Fredhead’s at The Atkinson for a wonderful night of live acoustic music.

The Club Night

7.30pm – April Moon
8pm – Vanessa Murray
8.40pm – Interval
9pm – The Often Herd

The Often Herd

The Often Herd transcend the traditional boundaries of bluegrass music. Although they might resemble an American string band, complete with driving energy, tight vocal harmonies and dazzling instrumental interplay, their vibrant, transatlantic sound is deeply coloured by their surroundings; the striking natural and industrial landscapes of Northern England. This unique approach won them the title of “Best European Bluegrass Band 2018” at the prestigious La Roche Bluegrass Festival in France.

Rupert Hughes (guitar) and Evan Davies (mandolin), write songs steeped in personal experience whilst drawing from a wide pool of influences ranging from old-time to psychedelia. American-born fiddler Niles Krieger and jazz bassist Sam Quintana add fiery instrumental skills to the mix, launching the band’s arrangements into the stratosphere. Together, their sound is both boldly contemporary and soothingly familiar, taking time-honoured traditions to new places with a fresh perspective. Flock to the herd, you won’t be disappointed.

“Traditional, inventive, tight and sharp […] for those who think they don’t like bluegrass this could be the point they change their minds.”Tom Franks, FolkWords

“Sprightly and lively; [The Often Herd’s debut EP] most certainly affords them welcome membership to the UK’s burgeoning bluegrass scene.”Mike Davies, FATEA

Vanessa Murray

Those of us who were at Grateful Fred’s last October, when Jesse Terry headlined, will remember that unfortunately, Daniel of “White Little Lies”, who were due to play, was taken ill at the last minute. But luckily for us his partner in the band, Vanessa, came along and played a solo set. And what a set it was!

Vanessa has one of the loveliest voices that you will hear and is also a great songwriter in her own right. She is also in demand for her talents as a vocalist on other artists’ recordings as well as forging ahead with Daniel and “White Little Lies”.

In view of what a great set Vanessa gave us in October, I have asked her back to perform for us again. If you were there in last time Vaneassa performed for us then you’ll know what to look forward to, if you missed Vanessa then, then you are in for a real treat.

April Moon

April Moon is Jaime April and Jason Moon and are a Canadian musical duo that hails from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada. These days they mostly live in the UK, recording and gigging around the NorthWest – Liverpool, Preston, Blackpool, Manchester, and everywhere in between.

The band has a great reputation for their live shows and it’s a pleasure to welcome them, for the first time, to Grateful Freds.
