Hello and welcome to The Atkinson’s exciting new programme in Sefton’s Borough of Culture year.

The Borough of Culture is awarded by Liverpool City Region to either Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens or Wirral on an annual basis. The initiative was introduced in 2018 to allow each borough to provide cultural programmes for local communities.

Sefton’s Borough of Culture programme focuses on storytelling, local history and the environment. For more information on events happening across the borough and ways to get involved visit sefton.gov.uk/sefton2020

Highlights at The Atkinson include Sefton Hidden Histories (11 Jan – 21 Mar), a new exhibition of items from our collection that may look insignificant, but have amazing stories to tell. In our Museum display, Between Land & Sea, you can also discover the history of those who have lived and worked along the Sefton coast.

Perfect for Valentine’s weekend, our sixth annual Love Folk Festival (14-15 Feb) is a celebration of new, upcoming and traditional folk music featuring Sheelanagig, Martyn Joseph, Merry Hell, Blair Dunlop, Granny’s Attic and Lucy Farrell & Andrew Waite.

Local artist Lisa Langan is hosting the popular Make It! (18 &20 Feb) craft workshops. We are also screening two updated Disney Classics in our Theatre; Beauty and the Beast (PG) (19 Feb) and Dumbo (PG) (21 Feb).

Listen to Michael Portillo‘s (3 Feb) story, told with a ‘parliamentary stand-up’ wit, followed by a Q&A and book signing in ‘Life: A Game of Two Halves’. We also welcome writer & broadcaster Dom Joly (11 Mar) who is best known as the creator of Trigger Happy TV, don’t miss this rare opportunity to see him live in ‘Travel & Comedy in the Danger Zone’.

Two crime writing workshops are followed by an in conversation with award-winning novelists including Ann Cleeves in The Murder Squad (26 Mar).

In Jeeves & Wooster in Perfect Nonsense (24-25 Mar), three actors hurl themselves from role to role as they race to tell the story of Bertie’s own farcical adventures in a joyous re-imagining of the classic P.G.Wodehouse characters.
