Soroptimist International of Southport

Soroptimist International of Southport

Soroptimist International of Southport is part of a worldwide organisation of women with a wide range of experience in management, the professions and other positions of responsibility. They work through service projects, fundraising and advocacy to advance human rights and the status of women – at local, national and international level. Friendship and fun are part of their ethos.

The exhibition currently on display in The Atkinson’s foyer marks the groups 90th anniversary.

One of the current projects is the Against Breast Cancer bra recycling scheme that takes unwanted bras and raises vital funds for pioneering breast cancer research.  Against Breast Cancer funds research into secondary spread, the main cause of breast cancer related deaths. For every tonne of bras collected, Against Breast Cancer receives £700 to fund research.

A bra donation box is situated in the foyer as part of the groups display.

With over 30 million women in the UK you could really help make a difference.  Your generous support will enable the funding of lifesaving research projects at some of the UK’s most respected academic establishments.

The same bras also help to support small businesses in developing countries in Africa and around the world, as Against Breast Cancer’s recycling partners, The Textile Recovery Project prevents bras going into landfill before giving them a new lease of life in countries such as Togo, Ghana and Kenya, where bras remain expensive to produce locally.

Successful ventures like this provide an income for families in developing countries. Any bras that are genuinely beyond redemption are dismantled and disposed of properly. It is a project that fulfils the Soroptimist vision of “Women inspiring action, transforming lives”.

Every bra helps! Please give generously. Clear out your wardrobes and drawers.
