Grateful Fred’s: Americana & Roots Music
Share:

Grateful Fred’s have been pioneering Americana and Roots music in Formby, Southport and Liverpool since 2010 and during that time have presented some of the best US, Canadian and World artists.

On the first Wednesday of every month, join the Fredhead’s at The Atkinson for a wonderful night of live acoustic music.

The Club Night

7.30pm – Paul Dunbar
8.00pm – Jenny Colquit
8.40pm – Interval
9.00pm – The Often Herd

The Often Herd

Those of us who were lucky enough to be at Grateful Fred’s in June last year will remember just how brilliant tonight’s headliners were.

Rupert, Evan, Niles and Sam, gave us one of the most exciting and fun nights of music of the year and we immediately asked them to return when they found time in their busy touring schedule.

Well, the time has come and if you haven’t seen or heard The Often Herd, then you are in for a real treat.

The Often Herd” transcend the traditional boundaries of bluegrass music. Although they might resemble an American string band, complete with driving energy, tight vocal harmonies and dazzling instrumental interplay, their vibrant, transatlantic sound is deeply coloured by their surroundings; the striking natural and industrial landscapes of Northern England. This unique approach won them the title of “Best European Bluegrass Band 2018” at the prestigious La Roche Bluegrass Festival in France.

Rupert Hughes (guitar) and Evan Davies (mandolin), write songs steeped in personal experience whilst drawing from a wide pool of influences ranging from old-time to psychedelia. American-born fiddler Niles Krieger and jazz bassist Sam Quintana add fiery instrumental skills to the mix, launching the band’s arrangements into the stratosphere. Together, their sound is both boldly contemporary and soothingly familiar, taking time-honoured traditions to new places with a fresh perspective. Flock to the herd, you won’t be disappointed.

“Traditional, inventive, tight and sharp […] for those who think they don’t like bluegrass this could be the point they change their minds.”

Tom Franks, FolkWords

“Sprightly and lively; [The Often Herd’s debut EP] most certainly affords them welcome membership to the UK’s burgeoning bluegrass scene.”

Jenny Colquit

Regular Fredheads will know just how good Jenny’s two previous appearances at Grateful Fred’s were.

From Jenny’s first surprise performance for us when she came purely as a friend of the band Merry Hell but ended up giving us a brilliant impromptu performance to her second appearance when she supported headliner Sandy McLelland, Jenny has blown us away each time.

Since then her reputation has soared right across the UK with appearances at major venues and festivals including Glastonbury, Cornbury and Beardy Festivals. As well as glowing reviews from BBC Radio 2’s Paul Sexton, among many others.

Jenny’s debut album ‘Something Beautiful’ was released on the 26th November 2021 and she will be performing songs from the album on this, her third appearance at Grateful Fred’s.

If you missed Jenny’s previous performances at Grateful Fred’s then you are in for a real treat.

Paul Dunbar

Those of you who were at Grateful Fred’s in November of last year will remember what a great performance Paul gave us when he opened for the Daniel Rodriguez Band.

So we are delighted to welcome Paul back to perform once again, this time with his trio.

Paul has performed at Grateful Fred’s three times previously, both as a solo musician and with his excellent band, The Black Winter Band. This evening he will be performing with his acoustic trio.

Liverpool-born Paul has one of the most powerful, soulful, signature voices with comparisons to the likes of Joe Cocker, Bruce Springsteen, Otis Redding and Tom Waits.

Having toured the UK and Europe, he’s performed with the likes of Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Big Country, Frank Turner, King King, James Taylor Quartet, CC Smugglers and has supported Jon Gomm.

Paul’s live shows showcase the range of his vocal, songwriting and performing talents and we are happy that we can welcome him back, once again, to Grateful Fred’s.
